Joshua Alexander

Joshua Alexander is currently a PhD student studying biomedical engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a focus on Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. In 2025, he received his bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Virginia where he was involved in a breadth of research experiences including novel biomaterial design, synthetic blood substitute optimization, and antibiotic protein engineering. Through these, he has acquired expertise in both material synthesis (peptides, recombinant proteins, lipid nanoparticles) and characterization (NMR, MALDI, SDS-PAGE, DLS, etc.).

Now, he is using novel bioprinting strategies and cell signaling approaches to develop a vascularized bone substitute for craniomaxillofacial injuries as part of the Department of Defense Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (DoD AFIRM) research. He is seeking to combine his knowledge of materials with stem cells and regenerative biology for translational applications. In 2026, he received the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) award to support his doctoral research.
