Graduate Research Assistant
Saimai Lau received his B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering (Robotics & Controls) and Mathematics (Applied Science) from the University of California San Diego in 2024, and his M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 2026. Currently, he is a Ph.D. student in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on the Bendy Bot (formally the Robotic Skeletal Fixation Shaper, RSFS), a robotic system for patient-specific bending of orthopaedic fixation plates. His work integrates robotic closed-loop control, orthopaedic implant manufacturing, continuum mechanics, and finite element modeling. He has a strong background in control theory, state estimation, and robotics (ROS 2, embedded systems), along with physics-based simulation (MuJoCo, Gazebo) and structural analysis (ANSYS/ABAQUS/FEA). His work bridges robotics, controls, and orthopaedic surgery to advance patient-specific solutions for skeletal fixation, in collaboration with The Ohio State University and advanced-manufacturing research partners.
